Morocco Surf Adventure, A First-Timer’s Complete Guide
A Morocco surf adventure is unlike anything else: powerful Atlantic waves, rich culture, and warm hospitality all in one trip.
When most people think of surfing in Morocco, their minds instantly jump to perfect Atlantic waves, endless sunshine, and laid-back surf towns like Taghazout and Tamraght.
And they’re right, Morocco is a dream come true for surfers.
But here’s the secret: there’s more to a Moroccan surf adventure than just the ocean.
From world-class breaks to surfing on sand dunes, this country offers a surf holiday unlike anywhere else. A Morocco surf adventure is one of the most rewarding travel experiences you can plan. Here is exactly what to expect.
1. Ride the Waves: Why a Morocco Surf Adventure Starts Here
With over 1,800 km of Atlantic coastline, Morocco is blessed with waves for every type of surfer.
Whether you’re a beginner catching your very first whitewater rides at Banana Beach or a seasoned surfer chasing the long, peeling rights at Anchor Point, you’ll find a spot that feels like it was made for you.
In Tamraght, home to Original Surf Morocco, we wake up each morning and check the swell, wind, and tide to pick the best break for the day.
Sometimes it’s Crocro for a gentle, sunny session.
Other days, it’s Devil’s Rock for a bit more punch. And for the pros, there’s always the lure of Anchor Point or Boilers when the swell is firing. This variety of breaks is what makes a Morocco surf adventure so special for surfers of all levels. Before every session, checking Magic Seaweed or Windguru gives you a clear picture of what to expect in the water.
2. DISCOVER THE THRILL OF SAND SURFING PART OF THE SURFING ADVENTURE
Surfing doesn’t have to end when the waves go flat.
One of Morocco’s hidden gems is sand surfing, also called sandboarding, in the vast golden dunes that stretch into the horizon.
Imagine gliding down steep desert slopes on a board, feeling the rush of speed with nothing but the sound of sand beneath you.
From Tamraght, it’s an easy day trip to the sand dunes of Tamri or the massive rolling dunes near Essaouira.
Sand surfing is pure fun, a perfect way to switch things up on your surf holiday, and it’s something you’ll be talking about long after your tan fades.
Plus, the sunsets over the dunes? Absolutely unforgettable.
3. SURFING ADVENTURE IS ALL ABOUT SOAKING UP THE SURF CULTURE
Morocco’s surf culture is more than boards and waves, it’s a way of life.
You’ll feel it in the early morning surf checks, the post-session mint tea, the fresh tagines shared with friends, and the laughter echoing from beach bonfires.
Staying in a surf camp like Original Surf Morocco means you’re not just surfing, you’re becoming part of a family.
You’ll share rides to the beach, swap stories over couscous Fridays, and relax with sunset yoga sessions on the terrace.
And when the day ends, you fall asleep to the sound of waves rolling in.
4. SURFING ADVENTURE THE PERFECT BALANCE: OCEAN & DESERT
Where else in the world can you surf perfect ocean waves in the morning and ride sand dunes by afternoon?
That’s the beauty of Morocco, the contrast is magical.
The combination of sea spray and desert dust creates an adventure you can’t find in the usual surf destinations.
It’s this variety that makes Morocco such a special place for a surf holiday.
It’s not just a trip; it’s an experience that connects you with nature in two completely different, yet equally exhilarating, ways.
Ready for your Moroccan surf adventure?
At Original Surf Morocco, we’ll take you from the best local breaks to the wild beauty of the dunes, and make sure you experience the magic of both. Whether you’re here for a week or just a few days, you’ll leave with salty hair, sandy feet, and a heart full of memories.
FAQ
Can I combine surfing with sand surfing/sandboarding on the same trip?
Yes, it’s one of the best-kept secrets of a Morocco surf adventure. When the swell is flat, or you just want a change of pace, the dunes of Tamri are an easy day trip from Tamraght. Many surfers spend their mornings in the water and their afternoons sandboarding down the dunes.
What is the surf capital of Morocco?
The surf capital is widely considered to be Taghazout, a laid-back fishing village turned surf haven just north of Agadir. It’s home to legendary breaks like Anchor Point, Panorama, and Hash Point, and has a buzzing surf community. Neighboring Tamraght, where Original Surf Morocco is based, offers equally great waves and a more relaxed atmosphere.
What makes a Morocco surf adventure different from a regular surf trip?
It’s the combination: you’re not just surfing, you’re experiencing ocean and desert in the same day, alongside genuine Moroccan hospitality: shared tagines, mint tea, sunset yoga, and a surf camp that feels more like family than a hotel stay.
What is the most famous wave in Morocco?
Without a doubt, Anchor Point in Taghazout is the most famous wave in Morocco. It’s a long, right-hand point break that can run for hundreds of meters on a good day. Surfers from around the globe travel here for the chance to ride this iconic wave, which works best in the winter months when the Atlantic swell is at its peak.
Moroccan Holiday: A Day At Original Surf Morocco As A Guest
INTRODUCTION TO YOUR DREAM MOROCCAN HOLIDAY
Have you ever wondered what having a dream Moroccan holiday is like?
Endless sunshine, hearty and traditional foods, and camel rides along the coast might be the first things that pop up in your mind when you think of a typical Moroccan holiday.
If you’ve never been to a surf camp before, you may be curious about how a day in the life is being spent here at Original Surf Morocco.
Well, worry not, we’re here to give you the full rundown on what a typical day in the life looks like from our guests’ point of view – from sunrise yoga to late-night card games, and more in between.
MOROCCAN HOLIDAY BEGINS WITH MORNING YOGA & BREAKFAST
We like to start our mornings out pretty relaxed by hanging out on the terrace with a delicious Moroccan tea before breakfast or joining in sunrise yoga at 7.30 am in the rooftop shala given by our in-home yoga teacher.
The class is typically a slow flow to get the body moving and grooving while still preserving our surf energy for the day ahead.
The backdrop from the shala is like no other, with a panoramic 360-degree view of Tamraght and the sweeping Atlantic coastline that seems to stretch as far and wide as the eyes can see, and the “om” chanted in class.

After working up an appetite, breakfast is served at 9 am on the rooftop. What a place to have breakfast, especially you’re having breakfast as you’re overlooking the whole Tamraght village.
Prepare yourself for a treat!
Our local Moroccan chefs, Omar and Mustapha, outdo themselves with a new creation every once and a while.
You’ll find the table laden with mint tea, spiced coffee, local fruits, eggs, fresh bread, pancakes or crepes, and a whole bunch of different dips to add your twist on the meal.
Surf fuel, check. ✅
PREPARING FOR THE SURF
Around 9.45 am, we wander downstairs to meet up with our surf instructors to get suited up for the day.
They are always ready to help with wetsuit fits, surf analysis, tips, and chitchat.
We pick out the proper wetsuit and surfboard before loading up the surf van, turning up your favourite jams, and driving out to the beach.
If you have never surfed before, have no fear! Original surf Morocco surf coaches are here.
Our experienced instructors know everything about the local breaks, surf spots, and what it takes to get beginners to surf their first wave.
They’re ready to get you standing up and catching waves on day one.
After a dynamic group warm-up on the beach, we’ll practice paddling and pop-ups on the shore before dragging our boards out into the ocean.
The friendly yet professional coaches will be alongside you all morning, pushing you into the perfect waves, cheering, and yelling “stand up” at just the right moment.
Be sure to listen up for the cheers and wohooos when you finally catch that first wave and ride it all the way to shore.
THE FREE SURFING SESSION IN THE AFTERNOON
After a morning of practice, we perch ourselves on the sand for a well-deserved lunch and lounge under the sun.
The afternoon is your free time to practice surfing on your own and to have fun.
So make sure to take a good advantage of this time to practice surfing, try to get familiar with the ocean, the waves, and what you were taught by the surf coaches during the morning session.

RETURNING TO THE SURF CAMP
After heading back to camp around 4 pm, you’ll have free time to a much-needed rest and relax, have a tea time, wander around, and explore the local village.
If you’ve taken it easy and still have energy for a walk, we’d recommend heading down to catch the sunset on Devil’s Rock or take a camel or horse ride down the beach.
DINNER TIME AT ORIGINAL SURF MOROCCO
Just be sure to come back to the camp around 7:30 pm for dinner because it is at 8 pm. If you’ve never had traditional Moroccan cuisine, you’re in for a feast!
You’ll find fresh bread, salad, and tajine, which is a North African stew of spiced meat and vegetables prepared by slow cooking in a shallow dish with a lid that looks similar to a volcano.
Fresh avocado or papaya smoothies made out of homegrown fruits, fruit salad, or mint cake are on the menu for dessert.
POST DINNER ROUTINE AT THE SURF CAMP
Following dinner, we’ll flick through the surf photos from the day and get some feedback on how to improve.
The rest of the evening is yours to play card games, chill out on the terrace with a bonfire, or head to Agadir to check out the nightlife.
Beware of the card games as we play with Moroccan rules that usually include the loser dancing or singing along to bad 80’s music with half the room laughing and secretly hoping they don’t lose the next round.
Be sure to catch enough zzz’s to wake up and hit the repeat button again the next day!
