5 Essential Surf Tips For Beginners Based On Common Mistakes

Posted By : Souhail Adib/ 2331 0

INTRODUCTION TO SURF TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Surf instructor give beginner surfer tips

If you’re new to surfing, welcome to the ride of your life! The ocean is an incredible place to learn, grow, and have fun—but let’s be honest: starting out isn’t always smooth sailing. And everyone makes mistakes but we are here to help along the way, and provide important surf tips for beginners.

Most beginner surfers make a few common mistakes in their first few sessions. And that’s alright.

The good news? Every mistake is part of the journey—and completely fixable.

Whether you’re getting ready for your first surf holiday or just want to improve your technique, here are five essential surfing tips for beginners to help you progress faster and stay safe in the water.

1. POPPING UP TOO SLOWLY OR TOO LATE

Popping up on the board appropriately is detrimental to riding the wave correctly. The proper technique greatly eases catching waves. So, the first thing that any beginner surfer should master is popping up, as it is an essential skill for surfing.

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is hesitating during the pop-up. If you take too long to stand up, the wave passes you by—or worse, you wipe out.

Tip: Practice your take-off on land until it becomes second nature. Use your core and arms to push up quickly in one fluid motion. The faster and more confidently you move, the better your chances of riding that wave.

If you’re surfing with us, pay close attention to the surf coaches when practicing the pop-up and listen carefully to their instructions, especially about popping up.

In our YouTube channel, we demonstrated how to pop up on the board properly. It puts our words into visuals.

2. STANDING IN THE WRONG POSITION ON THE BOARD

If you got your popping up under control, the next thing that comes after is standing on the board. Standing on the board correctly can make or break the surf.

If you’re too far forward, the nose dips. Too far back, and the board stalls. Finding the sweet spot is key to balance and control.

Tip: Your feet should land just over the center of the board during your pop-up. Practice with an instructor who can give you feedback, or use wax marks on your board to guide your foot placement.

Planting your feet on the centre of the board where your arms were when popping up and and angling your feet 45 degrees gives a strong base to surf the waves. Also, standing on the board properly make you able to manoeuvre where you want to ride with your core.

3. LOOKING DOWN INSTEAD OF AHEAD

It’s natural to glance down at your feet or the nose of your board, but doing so disrupts your balance and direction.

After standing on the board the first thing that comes to mind is to check your feet placement. However, looking down may cause you to lose your balance and fall.

Tip: Always look where you want to go. Keep your chin up, your eyes forward, and your weight centered. This one small adjustment can improve your surfing instantly. All extreme athletes say that surfing just like skating you have to observe your path. This trick will keep your feet on the board and you will feel that the latter is moving following your eyes.

4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT WAVES

Many beginners either paddle for every wave or wait too long for the “perfect” one. Either way, they miss valuable practice time. One of the most common novice surfers complain about especially the ones who are staying with us in the surf camp, is that they lack the adequate skills to choose the right wave based on their level to ride. It is very important to listen to surf instructors when they inform you about which wave is suitable for you.

Tip: Watch the waves before paddling out. Look for smooth, rolling waves that break consistently and aren’t too steep. Surf camps and local instructors can help you understand which waves are best for your level.

Spiders Spot: A challenging surf spot

5. SKIPPING THE WARM-UP & SURF ETIQUETTE

Heading straight into the water without warming up or learning basic surf rules can lead to injuries or frustrating sessions. As for any sports, warming up is essential to prevent injuries that may happen.

Tip: Stretch, jog, and warm up your shoulders before paddling out. Learn key etiquette like not dropping in on others, keeping your board under control, and staying aware of your surroundings.

So before you hit the waters, it’s really good idea to warm up and let your blood circulate. Also you should learn about surf etiquette, as well as, local surf culture.

FAQ ON SURF TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

What is the first trick to learn surfing?

The first “trick” every beginner should learn is how to pop up on the board — the movement from lying down to standing on your feet. Mastering the pop-up on land builds muscle memory, making it easier to do it in the water. It’s the foundation of every ride.

How to start surfing as a beginner?

Start by taking a surf lesson with a certified instructor. They’ll teach you ocean safety, paddling technique, board positioning, and how to pop up. Begin with a soft-top surfboard on a sandy beach with small waves. Most importantly, start slow, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process.

Is surfing hard for beginners?

Yes — at first! Surfing challenges your balance, timing, strength, and patience. The hardest part is often just learning to read waves and pop up consistently. But with the right mindset, proper instruction, and regular practice, it becomes incredibly rewarding and fun.

Is 20 too old to start surfing?

Not at all! 20 is a great age to start. Many people start surfing well into their 30s, 40s, or even later. Surfing is more about consistency and attitude than age — if you’re healthy and motivated, you’re never too old to start riding waves.

What are the best surf tips for beginners?

If you’re new to surfing, here are some essential tips to help you get started safely and confidently:

  1. Take a lesson – A qualified surf instructor will teach you the basics, help you understand ocean safety, and correct your form early on.

  2. Start on a soft-top board – Bigger, foam boards offer better stability and are ideal for learning.

  3. Practice your pop-up on land – Rehearse getting from lying down to standing before hitting the waves.

  4. Learn to read the ocean – Understanding wave patterns, currents, and tides is key to both safety and progression.

  5. Always warm up – Stretch and move your body before you paddle out to prevent injury.

At Original Surf Morocco, we have had the pleasure of accommodating digital nomads and guests working on different projects.

Between surf sessions and yoga classes, our digital nomads have found places to work on our spacious terraces, lounges, and dining room.

Coworking on the Moroccan surf coast consists of endless views of the majestic ocean, magnificent sunsets and sunrises, mint tea and fresh fruits, and, needless to say, non-stop source of waves! There are five breaks within a twenty-minute walk, which means you can turn in your work and be inside the water just in time to see the sun disappear into the Atlantic.

This blog is detailing seven reasons why coworking in Morocco should be on your bucket list as a digital nomad.

1: WAVES

The #32 bus line that goes from Agadir to Taghazout has just two words on the front display: Go Surf. This area has been built around the surf scene, and it’s easy to see why.

The consistency of swell from December to May and a wide array of points, beaches and reef breaks for surfers of all levels make Morocco a surfer’s dream.

There are user-friendly beach breaks for the beginners to make it into the lineup for their first green wave, gently sloping point breaks for intermediate surfers getting more comfortable in big swell, and heavy reefs and slabs that can give advanced waveriders the ride of their life.

Ramzi Boukhiam Top Moroccan Surfer Riding Waves At Anchor Point - Pro Taghazout Bay Competition

Morocco boasts world-class points like Anchor Point, Draculas, and Boilers — not for the faint of heart, but could be a perfect opportunity to reward yourself and polish your surfing after finishing that work task.

2: FUEL

Like work, surfing requires you to have plenty of energy for maximum results. Nourishment in Morocco is fresh and easy to come by.

As a surf accommodation now proudly offering coworking packages, we have adapted to the needs of our busy developers, marketers, and educators by supplying a constant flow of refreshments.

Breakfast

Coworking with Moroccan hospitality equals mint tea, coffee, bottled water and fresh fruits from the local souk.

Tamraght is a growing village, meaning that new cafes and restaurants are popping up constantly to provide you with brain food for maximum productivity.

3: UNPARALLELED VIEWS

Where better to gain inspiration than the ocean? Pictured below is where this blog was written, beneath the sun and amongst the flora, gazing at a rare flat day.

The European Centre for Environment & Human Health research shows that people who live on the coastline enjoy happier and healthier lives than their inland counterparts.

“Ocean therapy” has been used to spur creativity and reduce stress. If you can’t be surfing, you might as well look at the sea while you work.

The temperate coastal climate of Tamraght means that working outside year-round is possible with an average temperature of around twenty degrees in the winter and in the low thirties during summer months.

It’s perfect weather for coworking.

4: EASE OF ACCESS

Morocco was endowed with this unique work environment, and it is easily accessible to Europe. Agadir International Airport has daily arrivals of visitors coming for sun and surf from Europe, Asia and North America.

The emergence of low-cost airlines has made travel to and from Morocco highly affordable for travellers and digital nomads alike.

Digital nomads from a lot of countries have visa-free entry and can stay in the country for ninety days at a time. Digital nomads can legally work remotely for companies in their home country from Morocco or while visiting Morocco as tourists.

Getting around the surf coast is just as easy as getting to it. The Agadir local line #32 bus is roughly 0.5€ and runs frequently from Agadir to Taghazout with several stops in Tamraght. Local, grand taxis are readily available and affordable, too.

With several surf breaks and shops walkable in town or on the four-kilometre cycle path along the beach between Tamraght and Taghazout, those who prefer not to take any public transportation there are plenty of options either on foot or bicycle.

5: COST OF LIVING WHEN YOU COWORK IN MOROCCO

We touched on this briefly in the previous section. Morocco is a very affordable place to live and cowork.

Digital nomads are paid in euros, dollars, and pounds and that’s an advantage because these currencies go a long way when spending with Moroccan Dirhams.

NomadList states that the average total cost of living in Taghazout as a digital nomad is around 925€ per month.

Apartments for weekly rent are available from local real estate companies and we now offer coworking/coliving packages for professionals who have always wanted to experience what it’s like to live, eat, and work at a surf camp.

6: VIBES

While the ocean is just one example, environment influences the way in which our minds and bodies work.

Comfort and productivity have a striking correlation, and it’s proven that sunlight has positive effects on mood and energy.

Between three-hundred days of sunlight, the unlimited power of the ocean, and world-renowned Moroccan hospitality, this is the ideal place to get your mind and body right for full efficiency.

Yoga classes take place twice a day, at sunset and sunrise in the enclosed studio adjacent to the dining room. It is the ultimate way to wake up your body and mind for the day and wind down after finishing work.

7: BALANCE OF COWORK IN MOROCCO

This last section is meant to tie all of the above into one single point; balance. Work-life balance has shot up the list in important values for young professionals.

The work to live mentality is being replaced by a live-to-work mindset in which people have the freedom to work when and where suits them, have their favourite activities easily accessible, and structure their days the best they see fit.

This area gives digital nomads the best of many worlds: surf, fuel, environment, transportation and vibes at an affordable price.

Coworking and digital nomadism are exciting.

At Original Surf Morocco, we are proud to provide a space where digital nomads can let their minds and bodies run free.

We have surf hire and lessons on site, fibre-optic internet connection, two local chefs freshly preparing pre-ordered meals, unlimited refreshments with a coworking day pass, yoga classes, co-living packages, and Moroccan hospitality with plentiful dosages of sun and sea.

FAQ

Where is the best place for cowork in Morocco?

Tamraght, a laid-back surf village near Agadir, is one of the best spots for digital nomads in Morocco. It offers a relaxed coastal vibe, coworking-friendly accommodations, fast internet, and access to the beach and surf. These areas are popular for their mix of affordability, climate, and community.

What is the biggest company in Morocco?

The largest company in Morocco is OCP Group (Office Chérifien des Phosphates). It’s a state-owned phosphate mining and fertilizer company and one of the world’s leading exporters of phosphate-based products. What is the meaning of Cowork?

Agadir is one of Morocco’s most reliable surf zones. Thanks to the consistent Atlantic swell and more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s a surfer’s playground almost any time you visit.

Its accessibility is another big draw—just a few hours from major European cities, with low-cost flights available year-round. Once you land, you’re minutes away from surf-ready beaches, making it a hassle-free surf destination for quick getaways or longer retreats.

Agadir’s long, sandy beaches make it ideal for surfers of all levels. Whether you’re riding your first foamie or carving down a clean face, there’s a spot for you here.

What makes Agadir special for surfing is the fact that Agadir’s extensive coastline offers a variety of surf spots, each with its own character and charm.

GOOD VIBES FUSES SURFING WISDOM: QUOTES TO STOKE THE FIRE

A lot of surfers associate the surfing spirit only with the seaside; however, with this blog post, we want to dive into a reflection of what surfing is to us and to all the surfers out there.

“Surfing is all about being in tune with nature and that is one of the best feelings ever.”— Original Surf Morocco

Surfing Morocco with good vibes

These quotes reflect what we see every day at our camp: joy in progress, connection with the ocean, and laughter in wipeouts. Surfing is not about perfection; it’s about the experience, the people you meet, and the fun you have.

Surfing experience at the end of the day is not about how many waves you have ridden or how many tricks you slayed. It is about the fun and the memories you had and created during your surfing session or trip.

OCEAN LOVE & GOOD VIBES: QUOTES FROM THE HEART OF THE SEA

What is surf without the ocean? It is an unimaginable question to answer. Surfing relies on the ocean as we rely on oxygen. For us surfers, the ocean is our endless source of happiness, a precious treasure, and the only place that we yearn to be.

These quotes are here to summarise beautifully what we expressed.

“The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears, or the sea.” — Isak Dinesen
“The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination, and brings eternal joy to the soul.” — Robert Wyland
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” — Jacques Cousteau
“The sea is as near as we come to another world.” — Anne Stevenson
“Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.” — Unknown
“The waves of the sea help me get back to me.” — Jill Davis
“Every grain of sand tells the story of the earth.” — Rachel Carson
“Life and living need not be so hard if you choose the simple things and find joy in nature’s treasures.” — Psyche Roxas-Mendoza

The sea is our daily companion at Original Surf Morocco. These quotes echo the tranquility and awe we feel watching the Atlantic roll majestically every morning. They remind us of the ocean’s healing powers and why we build our days around it.

good Vibes: Smiling faces on the beach

TRAVEL INSPIRATION: WANDER WITH INTENTION

As J.R.R. Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost.” Traveling has a joy of its own; nothing is quite like it. Travelling rewards the soul by making it more fulfilled, the mind by stretching to horizons never experienced before, and the personality to grow wiser and forgiving.

Enjoy these quotes as they express what we want to say beautifully.

“One of the great things about travel is that you find out how many good, kind people there are.” — Edith Wharton
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” — St. Augustine
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did.” — Mark Twain
“Sometimes, the simple things are more fun and meaningful than all the banquets in the world.” — E.A. Bucchianeri

Travel is at the heart of every surf trip. Whether you’re coming solo or with friends, Morocco invites you to open your heart, slow down, and embrace a new rhythm. These quotes capture the spirit of surf travel—a blend of adventure, growth, and connection.

FINAL THOUGHTS: LET THE GOOD VIBES FLOW

At Original Surf Morocco, we’re all about soaking up the sunshine, sharing waves, and building a community where every traveler feels at home.

We cherish the family spirit here at Original Surf Morocco, as we treat each guest as our brother or sister. In turn, our guests feel the same vibes from us.

These quotes remind us why we fell in love with the ocean—and why we keep coming back to it, day after day.

5 Reasons to Surf in Agadir Instead of Portugal This Summer

Posted By : Souhail Adib/ 2304 0

Introduction of Surf in Agadir

In this blog, we discuss 5 solid reasons why surf in Agadir should be one of your plans this summer.

Those warm summer days are slowly approaching, and it’s about time to start thinking about where to spend the season. Will it be on a beach, in a city, or maybe even have a safari trip?

Beach in Agadir

But since you’re reading this blog, I can safely assume you’re either a surfer or you’re interested in becoming one.

So, a surf trip is currently brewing in that mind of yours.

There are top destinations all over the world for a surf holiday. Bali is an iconic surf haven in Southeast Asia. Costa Rica blends the South American love for the ocean with a laid-back lifestyle, with premier surfing destinations like Tamarindo, Nosara, and Santa Teresa making it highly attractive.

Then there’s Portugal. In the south-westernmost part of Europe, it’s a classic surf destination. With Mediterranean weather and a deeply rooted surf culture, Portugal is undeniably one of the most sought-after surf spots globally.

But what about Morocco—especially Agadir? It’s an underrated surf gem, growing in popularity by the day.

With a surf scene that’s buzzing and ideal surfing conditions—thanks to its Atlantic coastline and consistent swells—Agadir’s potential to attract surfers of all levels is skyrocketing. The options are endless, but the choice is ultimately yours.

If you’re scrolling this page from Europe and planning your next surf trip, Bali and Costa Rica, though incredible, may be a bit of a stretch due to the long distance. That narrows the playing field to two excellent summer options: Portugal and Morocco.

Surf in Agadir

Portugal, a wave-rich land in southwestern Europe, boasts legendary spots like Nazaré, known for its monstrous waves, the consistent barrels of Coxos in Ericeira, and Supertubos in Peniche—the holy grail of Portuguese surfing. These are spots that promise waves up to 20 feet and rideable barrels nearly every day of the year.

Agadir, located in north-western  part of Africa, shares many climatic and geographic similarities with Portugal.

It enjoys warm summers, mild winters, consistent swells, and a shared Atlantic Ocean. The Moroccan surf scene is thriving, and Agadir is leading the charge.

Anchor Point—known locally as Medraba—is a world-class wave that can reach over 12 feet on the right day. It’s the star of the annual Pro Taghazout Bay WSL competition.

Other fiery surf spots around Agadir include Anza, Banana Point, Boilers, and Killers.

So it comes down to Portugal vs. Agadir. Both are stellar surf destinations, full of unexpected adventure and liquid joy. But there are a few solid reasons why Agadir might just win your heart (and surfboard) this summer.

1. Warmer Water, No Wetsuit Needed

Summer water temperatures in Agadir average between 20–23°C (68–73°F), while in Portugal, even in the height of summer, the Atlantic on that side can be significantly cooler—around 16–19°C (60–66°F). That’s the difference between needing a wetsuit and not.

In Agadir, you can jump into the water wearing just boardshorts or a swimsuit, making your surf sessions more comfortable and spontaneous. No hassle of zipping into thick neoprene or rinsing out wetsuits afterward. It’s just you, your board, waves, and the Atlantic.

Carrying surf

This is ideal for beginners and casual surfers who want to keep things light and breezy. Plus, post-surf chilling on the beach feels that much better when you’re not shivering.

Surfing without wetsuits feels freer, more nature embracing, and invigorating.

Just getting into a wetsuit sometimes feels like a struggle as it is skinny-tight and some parts you have to pull till your shoulders fall off. So not having to worry about wearing one is just great detail that make all the difference.

2. Fewer Crowds, More Waves for You

Portugal is no secret. Summer crowds flood its beaches and surf lineups, and while the waves are consistent, you often have to compete for your share. And bare in mind the competition is no joke.

Agadir, on the other hand, still offers that raw, unspoiled surfing vibe. Especially in surf towns like Tamraght or nearby Taghazout, the beaches and waves feel more spacious and laid-back. You’ll find relaxed lineups and plenty of room to catch waves without feeling rushed or stressed.

And the off-season of the surf, the timing of publishing this blog, all the pro and advanced surfers head to destinations where the surf is really up. And that is a good news for me and you because that makes more room for us in the beaches and lineups.

Besides that Portugal is global surf scene while Morocco’s Agadir is underrated gem. So, the surfing crowds flock there with the numbers which makes not only the surf is crowded but everything else.

For beginners and intermediates, that’s a dream scenario. Spots like Banana Point and Devil’s Rock are mellow and beginner-friendly even in peak season.

Agadir Beach

3. Surf in Agadir: Better Value for Money

Let’s talk money. Portugal has become increasingly expensive over the years, especially during summer when tourism peaks.

Accommodation, surf lessons, and dining out can quickly add up. Plus, if you’re in Portugal you’ll be spending in euros, while in Morocco, you’ll be spending on Moroccan Dirhams. As of the time of writing this blog 1€=10.54MAD.

In Agadir, your euros stretch further. You can enjoy high-quality surf instruction, beautiful accommodation, and fresh, delicious Moroccan food at a fraction of the cost. A surf holiday in Morocco doesn’t mean cutting corners—it means getting more for less.

If you’re looking for a reliable all-inclusive experience, check out Original Surf Morocco’s surf packages. They include everything from accommodation and surf coaching to meals and yoga—offering excellent value without sacrificing quality or comfort.

So, if you want to have a blast of a surf trip and don’t want to break the bank. Agadir is the obvious choice. Morocco is way affordable than Portugal, not only for surfing but also for a lot of other things such as food, transportation, and everything else.

So for a better value for money, Agadir should be your option.

Fisherman Village, Taghazout

4. Authentic Cultural Experience

Surfing in Agadir isn’t just about waves—it’s about the full Moroccan experience. When you’re not in the water, you can explore local souk–the biggest traditional market in Africa, unwind in traditional hammams, or feast on slow-cooked tagines under the starry skies.

You can also learn some Moroccan expressions, explore traditional outfits, and enjoy local music.

You’ll be welcomed with open arms by the warm Moroccan hospitality that defines this region. Staying in local surf camps like those in Tamraght offers a unique window into Moroccan life. It’s the perfect blend of surf, culture, and adventure.

They call it magical Morocco for a reason. Morocco has a lot to offer than this blog can describe. It’s a place that combines rich culture, ancient heritage, and warm and loving people.

Portugal, while culturally rich, feels familiar to many Europeans. Morocco offers something more exotic, more immersive—something that sticks with you long after your trip ends.

Moroccan authentic dinner

5. Year-Round Surf & Sunny Weather

Agadir boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year. The weather in summer is reliably warm and dry, with barely a cloud in sight. No cold winds, no random summer storms—just consistent sunshine and fun-sized swells.

The weather is as consistent as the swells. So worry less about the possibility of raining during a good day of surfing, and even when it’s a bit chilly and the temperature tends to be colder, it is still really good weather by European standards.

For beginners and improvers, this is gold. Small to medium summer swells roll into beaches like Anza and Banana Point, creating the perfect learning conditions. Meanwhile, experienced surfers can still score powerful, clean waves early in the morning or during rare summer pulses in places like Anchor Point or Taghazout.

Surfing in Agadir

Conclusion: Why Agadir is Your Ultimate Summer Surf Destination

In the battle of surf destinations this summer, Agadir brings serious heat—literally and figuratively.

You’ve got warmer water, fewer crowds, better value, immersive culture, dependable waves under a sun-soaked sky, and much more.

So why not try something different this summer?

Escape the typical surf trip and discover a new rhythm by surfing in Agadir. Whether you’re learning to pop up for the first time or chasing clean point breaks, Agadir offers a surf experience that’s rich in waves, flavor, and soul.

First Time Surfing – My Surfing Experience at Original Surf Morocco

Posted By : Souhail Adib/ 2453 0

This is the story of my first time surfing, an experience that unfolded right here in my hometown of Agadir, at Panorama Beach—very close to Morocco’s surf mecca, Taghazout. This particular beach break was the perfect spot for beginners, thanks to its slow, forgiving waves and the spacious sandbanks left behind by the low tide, providing ample room to set up and practice.

First time surfing at Panorama Beach

As someone who handles marketing for a surf camp, I’ve spent a lot of time promoting the magic of surfing. But on this day, I stepped into the shoes of our guests—experiencing the thrill, the struggle, and the stoke first-hand. I wanted to fully understand what it feels like to start from zero, just like many of our visitors who travel from all over to learn to surf with us.

Experiencing First Time Surfing as a Guest at Original Surf Morocco

Every surf trip at Original Surf Morocco starts with a few essentials: finding the right wetsuit and selecting a surfboard based on skill level. As a complete beginner, I was given a soft-top board, which is wider and more buoyant, making it easier to balance and catch waves.

Softboard

After gearing up, we drove along the coast, checking different surf spots to see where the best waves were rolling in. Panorama Beach was the winner of the day. Once we arrived, we unpacked our boards and gear, settled on the sand, and began getting ready for the session ahead.

The Warm-Up & First Time Surfing Lesson

Before diving into the waves, we started with a quick jog along the beach to get our bodies moving, followed by dynamic stretching to loosen up and avoid injuries. This was especially important, as surfing demands flexibility and core strength.

Getting ready to hit the water

Next came the surf lesson, led by our experienced instructors. They walked us through the foundational techniques:

  • How to properly lay on the board to maintain balance.
  • The correct paddling motion to generate enough speed.
  • How to spot the right waves to catch.
  • The pop-up technique to go from lying down to standing up.
  • Basic safety rules, including how to handle wipeouts.

On the beach, the pop-up seemed simple enough: paddle hard, place your hands on the board, push up into a pike position, slide your back foot first, then place your front foot where your hands were. Easy, right?

That’s what I thought—until I got into the water.

Hitting the Water: A Chilly Welcome

The sun was shining, but the water was cold—a reality check that I hadn’t fully prepared for. Wetsuits were a must, and even then, stepping into the water was a bit uncomfortable. But there was no turning back.

From the shore, surfing looks simple. You paddle, pop up, and ride the wave, right? Wrong.

As soon as I waded deeper into the water, the first real challenge presented itself: getting past the whitewash. Even the small, broken waves held enough power to knock me off balance. Every time I tried to paddle forward, another wave came crashing in, pushing me back toward the shore. It was frustrating but also exhilarating—a true test of persistence. The key is to keep going.

The Paddling Struggle

Once I finally managed to get past the relentless whitewash, I focused on paddling further out, where the waves were breaking.

Paddling is exhausting.

It requires upper body strength and proper technique. My arms grew tired as I fought against the waves, and I struggled to maintain my balance on the board. Sometimes, I’d mistime my paddling and get hit square in the face by an incoming wave. Other times, I’d slip off my board entirely.

But every beginner struggles. And struggling is part of the learning process.

The Moment of Truth: First Time Surfing

Finally, I made it to the lineup, where I sat on my board, catching my breath and observing the waves. My instructor guided me on when to start paddling and which waves to chase.

Go, go, go! Paddle paddle!” I heard him shout as I turned my board toward the shore and paddled with all my might.

The wave picked me up, and for a split second, everything felt weightless. I quickly placed my hands on the board, attempted the pop-up—and immediately wiped out.

I tumbled underwater, feeling the raw power of the wave as it tossed me around like a ragdoll. When I surfaced, I gasped for air, spit out a mouthful of saltwater, and climbed back onto my board, ready to try again.

The Thrill of Standing Up

It took several failed attempts before I finally did it.

I paddled hard, felt the wave lift my board, and this time, I pushed up smoothly. My back foot found its place, followed by my front foot. I bent my knees, kept my eyes on the shore, and suddenly—I was surfing.

For a few glorious seconds, I felt weightless, gliding effortlessly on the wave. It was a mix of flying and floating, an electrifying feeling that wiped away all the exhaustion and frustration from earlier.

And just as quickly as it started, I lost my balance and fell. But it didn’t matter. I had stood up. I had surfed.

Fist time standing on the board

The Aftermath: A Newfound Respect for Surfing

By the end of the session, I was drained. My shoulders burned, and I had probably swallowed half the ocean. But I was also hooked.

Surfing is not just about catching waves—it’s about patience, resilience, and being in sync with the ocean. The sport demands upper body strength for paddling, core stability for balance, and mental focus to read the waves. It’s a workout, a meditation, and a thrill ride all in one.

Final Thoughts on First Time Surfing

Looking back, my first time surfing was a mix of wiping out, struggling, learning, and triumphing. It was frustrating at times, but it was also one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

So if you’ve ever thought about trying surfing, don’t overthink it—just go for it. You’ll wipe out, you’ll struggle, but in the end, you’ll also fall in love with the waves.

See you in the water! 🌊🤙
